Competence field 1: Competency in one or more scientific disciplines
  1. Master advanced knowledge in nutrition security and nutrition and creatively apply it to alleviate nutrition imbalances and food insecurity from a public health nutrition perspective
  2. Independently and critically identify the role of different disciplines in addressing the determinants of nutrition deficiencies and food insecurity problems
  3. Apply epidemiological and statistical concepts to analyse the importance of nutrition deficiencies from a public health perspective
  4. Identify and appraise the importance of the determinants of food safety and food quality
  5. Reflect on the implementation and management limits and benefits of major existing nutrition related interventions
Competence field 2: Scientific competency
  1. Critically appraise international publications and use these sources appropriately in original research
  2. Select and adapt research designs in public health nutrition or food security
  3. Develop a research proposal based on the critical analysis of existing evidence and the identification of research gaps
  4. Critically evaluate research results and identify knowledge gaps
  5. Develop risk based guidelines to improve food safety and controlling the whole agro-food chain (farm to fork) chain with sustainable management
Competence field 3: Intellectual competency
  1. Write a policy brief with a public health nutrition perspective, based on a critical appraisal and contextualization of evidence
  2. Identify and evaluate the importance of the determinants of nutrition disorders and food insecurity in order to make choices on possible interventions with respect to different disciplines
  3. Develop de novo strategies addressing major determinants in nutrition livelihoods, evaluating the contribution of different disciplines
  4. Critically analyze policies and provide arguments within a group on pros and cons of management and policy options
  5. Identify one’s own role in addressing a multi-disciplinary approach to address the problems related to malnutrition and food insecurity
  6. Appraise the quality of existing information on arising challenges in public health nutrition and nutrition security and develop a knowledge based guideline identifying knowledge gaps, which serves as a basis for lifelong learning
Competence field 4: Competency in collaborating and communicating
  1. Communicate the critical evaluation by a group, of published papers relating to nutrition and food security
  2. Communicate a research proposal to a group of peers, and provide feedback on research proposals
  3. Communicate in writing and present one’s own research and solutions to problems in the area of nutrition and food security to specialists, non-specialists and other parties involved
  4. Work with fellow students of different cultural and educational backgrounds and gain insight in diversity of perspectives related to these
Competence field 5: Social competency
  1. Critically reflect and take a position on ethical issues in research and development issues in nutrition and food security
  2. Critically reflect on the activities of national and international organizations active in alleviating malnutrition and food insecurity
  3. Appreciate cultural differences in how problems are defined and addressed
  4. Adapt evidence to the local context and evaluate the external validity of evidence
  5. Able to look at the food chain system from an environmental and sustainability perspective
